The Chamber of Commerce is an association of
business owners in a geographical area. By banding together, the
association can work effectively to improve business and the community.
Since a healthy community leads to healthy businesses, the mandate can
be far reaching. Businesses pay a membership fee to become a part of the
association. The membership fees support the activities of the
association and give the member a voice in the Chamber's activities.
Membership also has many other advantages
through discounts on credit card fees, long distance, fuel, etc. These
come from the buying power of the association and are an added bonus to
membership.
The Chamber is run by a
volunteer board of 12 people that
are elected from the
membership at our annual general meeting. The Chamber office is
run by a manager.
The board makes the vast majority of the
decisions on behalf of the membership regarding spending, policy, and
the Chamber's specific activities. An office manager and staff work for
this board and perform most of the actual work. The Chamber office also
acts as a tourist information outlet and general resource centre for
business and the community.
The Chamber of Commerce maintains an excellent
resource library on industry and tourism, government statistics, land
use strategy reports, and licensing and regulations for new or existing
businesses. If you are contemplating starting a new business and require
assistance in determining just what it is you have to do, we would be
happy to go through the preliminary stages with you. Traditionally, the
Chamber is a lobbying force on behalf of the businesses and the
community. Representing the business leaders in the community, the
opinion of the Chamber has considerable impact at the local and
provincial level.
People or businesses considering relocating or
establishing in Powell River can request a "Relocation Package" from us.
The Chamber becomes
involved in virtually every issue in the community.
This means working with everyone from local
council to corporate CEO's to ensure that Powell River continues to be a
great place to visit and live. The Chamber has other areas of
concentration. It is involved in community events and activities. It
hosts educational seminars, promotes the community and represents the
community at various groups, associations, and committees. Lastly, the
Chamber represents a networking opportunity for local businesses.
At the various functions and at the monthly
meetings, members congregate to discuss issues, express opinions, meet
new faces and establish business relationships.
